As the holidays approach, I always find myself craving that balance between festive and manageable. I want the food to feel special – colorful, flavorful, nourishing, but I don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. That’s where a few real-food staple heroes come in.
This season, two of my favorite flavor boosters are preserved lemons and a simple seed-oil-free Sichuan chili oil. Both are effortless ways to bring big flavor and support gut health, especially during a season that can easily tip toward indulgence and stress.
In this post, I’ll show you how to use preserved lemons and chili oil for gut health in easy, holiday-friendly ways – the kind that make your leftovers feel brand new and your meals taste like you worked far harder than you actually did.
Why Preserved Lemons & Chili Oil Belong in Every Holiday Kitchen

Both of these condiments are what I call “work-smarter” foods – tiny flavor bombs that transform simple ingredients.
Preserved lemons add brightness, a salty-citrus depth that wakes up anything from roasted vegetables to creamy dressings. If you haven’t made a jar yet, you can find my full recipe in How to Preserve Lemons 2 Easy Ways | Freezer & Salt Recipes.
Chili oil, on the other hand, brings warmth, spice, and complexity. It’s especially satisfying when you’ve been eating leftovers for days and need to feel transported by flavor again. My version uses avocado oil, dried chili flakes, and Sichuan peppercorns – a completely seed-oil-free take on a traditional favorite that still supports gut health and digestion.
Both ingredients deliver beneficial compounds that gently stimulate digestion – from the citrus enzymes in preserved lemons to the capsaicin and polyphenols in chili oil. A little bit goes a long way toward making real-food meals exciting again.
1. Brighten Your Mayo or Dressing

If you’ve ever wished your homemade mayo had more life, just add a spoonful of minced preserved lemon. It adds saltiness and tang without vinegar or sugar. I mix it through my mayo with a pinch of garlic powder and chopped herbs – parsley or dill, and suddenly I have a quick preserved lemon mayo that pairs beautifully with roast chicken or cold vegetables.
You can do the same with chili oil. Whisk a teaspoon into your mayo or yogurt for a spicy dipping sauce that’s perfect for roast potatoes, grain bowls, or even leftover turkey sandwiches.
This one simple tweak is a perfect example of how to use preserved lemons and chili oil for gut health – both contain natural acids and spices that support digestion, but they taste indulgent, not medicinal.
2. Transform Leftovers into Fresh Meals
Leftovers are the hidden gift of the holidays – if you know how to make them interesting.
My favorite quick lunch after a roast is a chicken sandwich with preserved lemon mayo on sourdough. I layer leftover chicken, crisp lettuce, a little cranberry sauce, and that lemony mayo for a bright, satisfying meal that feels new again.
When I’m tired of the same flavors, I turn to my Sichuan chili oil. Just a drizzle over day-old roasted vegetables or rice brings instant life back to them. That gentle heat wakes everything up – and because it’s made with avocado oil, it stays light, not greasy.
You can even stir a spoonful into bone broth or soup for a warming, gut-nourishing lunch. It’s the easiest way to eat real food all week without extra prep.

3. Add a Festive Touch to Simple Dishes
During December, I like to elevate ordinary meals in tiny ways. A dollop of preserved lemon mayo on a grazing board or a swirl of chili oil on hummus turns casual snacks into something that feels celebratory.
For dinner, I’ll mix preserved lemon into roasted veggie bowls or use it as a marinade for fish. Chili oil is perfect drizzled over eggs, pasta, or even sourdough pizza – small touches that make everyday food feel worthy of the holidays.
These two condiments prove you can cook with gut-healthy ingredients and still have meals that look and taste joyful.
4. Real-Food Gift Idea

If you love gifting food, preserved lemons and chili oil both make beautiful homemade presents.
- Spoon your chili oil into a small glass jar, tie it with a ribbon, and label it “Seed-Oil-Free Chili Oil – Mild Heat”.
- For preserved lemons, include a tag with simple ideas like “add to roast chicken or salad dressing.”
It’s a lovely way to share your real-food approach with friends – something that feels special, useful, and full of intention.
5. The Gut-Healthy Balance of Flavor and Calm
What I love most about using preserved lemons and chili oil for gut health is that they invite us to slow down.
Instead of relying on bottled sauces or ultra-processed condiments, you’re flavoring your meals with whole ingredients and time. You’re connecting to your food in a way that naturally supports digestion and calm – both things we need during the holidays.
This is what being grounded before the holidays means for me: using what I have, preparing simple food that brings joy, and letting flavor do the heavy lifting so I can be more present with my family.
